As Director of Finance, Erin Marsland is dedicated to the mission of Broadway House for Continuing Care: “It feels good to know the work we do here provides exemplary care—in a non-judgmental way—to the demographic we serve.”
Tell us about yourself.
I grew up in Doylestown, Pa., graduating from Villanova University with a degree in economics. As a college student, I gained some experience working with my mom, who was a CFO for a property management firm. As a result, after graduation my resume attracted the attention of a huge property management company in Boston, where I then worked as an Investment Portfolio Accountant for low-income housing. Later, I moved home to earn an MBA with a concentration in healthcare administration from Rider University, and today, I’m married with three children.
What brought you to Broadway House?
My father owned Hubco Health Care Group, and Broadway House was one of his clients. In fact, he helped Broadway House to open by getting the facility’s certificate of need from the state. Back in 2005, Broadway House needed a Director of Finance to complete all of the financial reporting. It was a perfect match for my skill set. Initially, I worked through Hubco, but in 2019 decided to open my own firm. Now, I enjoy the flexibility of self-employment. I currently have five clients, including Broadway House. They’re mostly mom and pop facilities, with a mix of nursing homes and assisted living facilities. While it’s challenging, I find great fulfillment in my work.
What’s your role at Broadway House?
Through analysis and insight, I make sure there is money to pay the bills, whether that involves helping to manage the census or making recommendations on how to reduce expenses. I oversee and reconcile all of the organization’s journal entries, accrual based expenses, cash reconciliation, fraud prevention, and coding.
My job involves working closely with others at Broadway House. Angela Moroney-Cymbaluk and Mariela Cardenas enter the data points for all of the accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll. I also work closely with Director of Social Services Gloria Horton, BA, CSW, CDP, CDVC, on the Ryan White HIV/AIDS HRSA grant to request the award, reconcile the budget, and prepare the financial reports, while Gloria handles the clinical side. Finally, I provide monthly financials to University Hospital, with which we have a private contractual relationship.
Your approach is very mission-driven.
I truly value my partnership with Broadway House—it’s mutually beneficial. Many institutions hire an in-house CFO, which comes with a broader package of benefits. As a consultant, my work is a fraction of the salary and benefits a CFO would command.
Yet, this relationship goes way beyond finances. Broadway House is the first nonprofit I ever worked with. As a predominantly Medicaid facility, we constantly juggle resources to provide quality care with exceptional health outcomes. It is such an achievement—I’m proud to see where we’ve come from to where we are now. Broadway House is a special place.
