Next week is National Volunteer Week. Thank you to the many volunteers who make Broadway House a healing home for our residents. Meet NJIT student Jonas Muller, who lends a hand with our Activities team on Fridays.
1. Rutherford resident Jonas Muller began volunteering at Broadway House last September. He will be helping out with our Activities team every Friday until the end of his spring semester next month.
2. A student at New Jersey Institute of Technology, Jonas is majoring in biochemistry with a minor in physics. He has already applied to several research programs and is planning a career as a physician. Eventually, he’d like to work in public policy and public health.
3. A longtime community volunteer, Jonas is a nationally certified EMT for his hometown. He’s also a member of the North American Disease Intervention (NADI) club at NJIT, helping to conduct health screenings within the greater Newark community.
4. Jonas intentionally created his academic schedule to leave Fridays free for volunteering. A friend of his mother introduced him to Broadway House: “It was a good fit—it just felt right. Broadway House also lets me see healthcare from a long-term care perspective.”
5. He values interacting with Broadway House residents: “I want to facilitate joy and excitement in our residents. Having an upbeat attitude and saying a simple good morning is sometimes all it takes to make a difference. Lending an ear while residents share their stories helps them to feel like they’re heard.”
6. When he’s not volunteering at Broadway House, Jonas enjoys playing folk and country music on his guitar and his recently acquired banjo: “As a student, most of my time is spent in school or studying. But I do enjoy outdoorsy stuff like camping and fishing, and I’m taking a motorcycle class as well.”
