Happy National Pharmacist Day

Jan 25, 2022

As Partner-in-Charge at Generation Pharmacy, Debra Schimpf, BSPHARM, RPH, teams up with the Broadway House medical team to ensure a coordinated care approach for every resident.

Tell us about yourself.

I have more than 30 years of experience in pharmacy management and operations in long-term care, assisted living, group home, and independent community environments. For the past nine years, I’ve been Pharmacist-in-Charge and Director of Clinical Operations at Generation Pharmacy, which has served Broadway House since 2014. I am a graduate of the Rutgers College of Pharmacy and live in Sparta, NJ. I’ve also been happily married for 30 years, with four children and two Yorkie terriers.

What’s your role at Broadway House?

As the Generation Pharmacy account representative, I’m responsible for quality assurance and quality improvement. That involves working collaboratively with Broadway House nurses and physicians to closely monitor medications and maximize therapeutic outcomes for our residents. We identify where there could be potential problems and come up with a solution together.

I’m also a very proud member of the Broadway House team that recently earned a Gold Award for antimicrobial stewardship from the New Jersey Department of Health. Since our antibiotic stewardship program was initiated in 2017, our team has strived for excellence. The Gold Award is a representation of the hard work and perseverance all of us have contributed to this program.

You’ve also administered thousands of COVID-19 vaccines.

Yes, I have. Beginning last April, I have provided vaccines—first and second doses, as well as boosters—during Broadway House vaccination clinics at least twice monthly for residents, staff, and family members. In addition to my role at Broadway House, I’ve worked with the Morris County Department of Health to vaccinate and boost 9,000 homebound people in our community. It’s about much more than administering vaccines. Making a difference makes me happy. If I can place a smile on someone’s face, that makes my day. I believe God has a plan for me to give to others. It’s spiritual.

What’s special about Broadway House?

Broadway House welcomes all of their consultants and vendors as part of the team. They value and respect our opinions and truly want to collaborate with us to provide the very best care for Broadway House residents. I don’t mind if staff text, email, or call me at any time. I really feel that I am not just a provider pharmacist—I’m a member of the Broadway House family. It’s hard to put into words how I feel when I enter this facility. It’s like a big hug.  I love Broadway House!
